[References: 1-2]

Round 6 (12 November 2022)

Terenure College maintained their 100% record with a 38-21 bonus point victory over Ballynahinch who dropped to sixth behind Young Munster who picked up a morale-boosting 24-16 victory over Clontarf who picked up a bonus point in an error-strewn match that recorded one penalty try for the Limerick side and four successful penalties for the North Dublin club. Dublin University took advantage of Clontarf’s loss to move into second place with a 34-28 victory over Shannon. UCD moved above both Shannon and Lansdowne thanks to a 47-22 win at Garryowen leaving the Limerick team still looking for their first win of the season. Report

The Celtic League in Rugby Union underwent another name change in 2017 with the addition of two South African Provinces: Southern Kings and Cheetahs. Leinster won the Championship in 2017-18 and again in 2018-19, and were well out in front in 2019-20 after winning all of their first 13 games before the COVID-19 virus outbreak caused the cancellation of the rest of the season. The Pro 14 returned to play in 2020-21 with the temporary absence of the South African Provinces. Leinster defeated Munster 16-6 in the Final series to continue their dominance of the Pro 14

About Pro14 Rugby

14 Clubs from across five Nations: Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Italy and South Africa compete for the Guinness Pro14 Rugby Championship. The Leagues Origins lie in the formation of a competition for Welsh and Scottish clubs, which in 2001 became the Celtic League after the addition of the four Irish Provinces. In 2010 the Competition added two Italian Clubs to bring the number of countries involved to four, reflected in the name change to Pro12 in later seasons. In what was an historic move in 2017, the Competition became the most diverse yet, with the addition of two South African Provinces, becoming a Cross-Hemisphere Competition for the first time.

Report

The Celtic Rugby Ltd-run Pro 14 Rainbow Cup 2021 was scheduled to include four South African Provinces in their absence at the Pro 14 League due to COVID-19 Coronavirus Pandemic Restrictions. It kicked off on the Weekend of the 23rd to 25th April minus those four provinces.

Round 1 23-24 April 2021

Connacht, Munster, Dragons, Ospreys and Benetton all picked up bonus points wins in the opening round of the Rainbow Cup. Ulster picked up both a Try Bonus and a Losing Bonus in their 24-26 loss to Connacht, while Munster trounced Leinster 27-3. In Wales, Dragons defeated Scarlets 52-32 in the highest-scoring encounter of the weekend, while Ospreys defeated Cardiff Blues 36-14. In the Scottish-Italian matches, Benetton were surprisingly big winners over Glasgow Warriors, 46-19, while Edinburgh were made to work against Zebre, prevailing 24-18 in the end.

Round 2 7-9 May 2021

Benetton and Munster were the only two undefeated teams after Round 2 of the Guinness Pro 14 Rainbow Cup in 2021 after wins over Zebre (25-20) and Ulster (38-10). Climbing into first place in the Welsh part of the draw were Dragons with a huge 52-32 win over Cardiff Blues although all four teams in Wales were on 1 win and 1 loss following Ospreys victory at home to Scarlets. Dragons however had two bonus points. Rounding out the matches were Glasgow Warriors 29-19 versus Edinburgh and a big Leinster win at Connacht (50-21) as the West Ireland Province felt the backlash of the previous weeks loss to Munster where Leinster only scored three points.

Report

There were no big shocks in the 1999 Rugby World Cup Americas Zone qualifying with seeded teams Argentina, Canada and USA qualifying for the Finals out of Round D ahead of Uruguay who had progressed to Round D. The 12 Countries were seeded into one of four Rounds, with 6 countries starting in Round A, from which Trinidad & Tobago and Bermuda progressed from the two groups. The Caribbean Island which shares St. Patrick’s Day as its National Holiday, Barbados (virtually all Barbadians are descendents of Irish and African slaves), lost both their matches to Bahamas (23-37) and Bermuda (3-52). Round B saw Chile progess to Round C, where they made a minor shock in defeating Paraguay, but it was Uruguay who progessed with a 20-14 defeat of the Chileans. Round D opened with Argentina winning big over USA and Canada defeating Uruguay. The only close mzatch in Round D was USA’s 21-16 win over Uruguay in the 3rd Round of matches which decided the third team to go through to the Finals along with Round winners Argentina and Runners-Up Canada. Uruguay Qualified for the Repechage.

Report

The Seven Asia Zone Qualifying teams played three Rounds to decide the team to represent Asia at the 1999 Rugby World Cup. Sri Lanka progressed from Round A after wins over Thailand and Singapore, and in Round B nearly pulled off a shock, defeating Malaysia and narrowly losing (27-31) to Chinese Taipei, who went through to Round C having won convincingly over Malaysia. There they met Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong, and despite a shock win over Hong Kong were completely outclassed by both South Korea and Japan, losing 6-134 to the latter in the biggest score and highest margin of victory in the qualifying tournament. Japan went on to Qualify with easy wins over Hong Kong and South Korea, who despite losing to Hong Kong went through to the Repechage Tournament by virtue of their 81-21 win over Chinese Taipei.

Report

Ireland’s best ever performances in the Women’s Six Nations Rugby came when winning the Championship in 2013 and 2015. In 2013 Ireland won all five matches finishing four points ahead of both France and England. The 2015 Championship was the most competitive, with four points separating the top five countries, Ireland winning on points difference from France after both finished on 8 points. Ireland had been steadily improving, having finished fourth in both 2007 and 2008, the Irish Women then came third four years running from 2009 to 2012 before their big triumph in 2013. In 2014 it was back to third, and again in 2016 after victory in the 2015 Championship. Try and Losing Bonus Bonus Points were brought in from 2017 onwards, with double the amount of points for a win or draw.
